Searchable multi-select dropdowns in HubSpot forms: the missing feature
Forty checkboxes or a hundred-option dropdown — HubSpot forms have no search box. The native mitigations, the select2 custom-code route, and a zero-code alternative.
Ask for “which products are you interested in?” with 40 options and HubSpot renders 40 checkboxes — a wall the height of the page. Put 100 countries in a dropdown and mobile users scroll for a week. What every visitor expects — type a few letters, see matching options, tick several — HubSpot forms simply don’t have. No search, no type-ahead, no tokenised multi-select.
Native mitigations (and their costs)
- Shorten the list. Group 40 options into 8 categories. Cleaner UX, coarser data — sales loses the detail it wanted.
- Split across forms or steps. Progressive profiling asks fewer questions per visit; multi-step forms hide the wall. Both restructure your funnel to dodge a UI limitation.
- Free-text field instead. Visitors type anything; your reports get “USA”, “U.S.”, “United States” and “america”. Nobody wins.
The custom-code route
The classic recipe: on a CMS-hosted page, wait for the form’s ready event, then mount select2 or choices.js over the native select and sync every change back into the original input (and fire input/change so validation and the submission payload stay correct). Known sharp edges: the newer embed renders inside an iframe your script must pierce; checkbox groups need rebuilding as a fake select; library CSS fights the form theme; and the whole thing silently dies when the embed version changes. It’s a fun afternoon that becomes a permanent maintenance chore.
Why it’s worth fixing at all
Long-list questions are usually the highest-value fields on the form — products of interest, industry, jurisdiction. They’re also where abandonment spikes: the harder the control, the more visitors quit or pick the first plausible option. A searchable control turns the worst field on the form into a two-second interaction and your cleanest data source.
Or automate it
FormRecall Enhance adds type-ahead search to any dropdown with 8+ options and converts long checkbox groups (12+) into a searchable multi-select with tokens — one script tag, thresholds tunable per portal, per-form off switch. Every selection is written back into the native HubSpot inputs, so submissions, analytics and workflows don’t change at all. See the before/after on the landing page.
